Case Study: Executive Transitions
A closer look at Executive Transitions for a transitioning IT leader.
Situation and Challenge
An engineering project leader attended my career transition seminar and followed up to explore private coaching. He was in an especially challenging situation, as he was unemployed for two years, and he was also unhappy with his geographical location. It did not support his deep passion for hiking, mountain climbing, and a majestic natural environment. Due to these factors, he didn’t know how to move forward. And the longer he was stuck, the more confidence he lost. He needed to uncover his next right direction and gain strategies to get there.
Services Provided
The first part of our work was focused on greater self-awareness, such as his career and work culture preferences, personal beliefs, talents and motivators, and ultimately, his unique contribution so that he could pursue meaningful work. He placed all important career elements into his Ideal Job Profile – a tool I give transition clients. Our work also helped him to articulate his clear direction and professional brand – which he conveyed in his resumé, LinkedIn profile, and networking discussions. Our coaching included other search strategies, such as negotiating and the decision process.
Results
The client reached a pivotal point as he became clear that he needed to make a geographical move in order to be happy – and even needed to move prior to executing a search. He drove his belongings across the country and ended up finding an ideal apartment with a beautiful view of the mountain regions. Our branding helped him gain confidence about the personal story he shared in his search. He landed a job in a related field, enabling him to add value while refreshing his skills. His new life chapter enables him to have a great impact at work while enjoying a lifestyle that supports his passion of the outdoors.
